Job Purpose / Objective
Responsible for the operation of the drill floor including drawworks, mud circulating systems, rotary system, compensator equipment (when applicable) and BOP equipment.
Key Accountabilities
The Driller is accountable for his own acts and decisions.
QHSE Responsibilities:
- The Driller must STOP the job if the situation is unsafe and report to Toolpusher.
- Conducts operations in a safe manner according to ADC Policies and Procedures.
- Applies proper rig operating procedures, STOP unsafe practices. Report near misses in real time.
- Plays an active part in QHSE meetings, Tool box meetings, QIP (Quality Improvement Projects) Mentoring, Coaching.
- Is proficient in STOP Program, and promotes the use of STOP for employees under his supervision.
- Ensures that drilling operations are conducted in accordance with ADC HSE policies and procedures and meet with contractual obligations.
- Responsible for QHSE policies implementation and good practices training on the rig.
- Responsible for the practical training, Coaching, Mentoring of the new people in his crew, as part of his duties.
- Organizes and leads daily Pre-tour meetings, weekly crew safety meetings and Tool box meetings.
- Plays an active part in the LPT (Loss Prevention Team).
- Make sure that Permit to work, JSA’s and Procedures are used to perform drilling activities.
- Develop JSA’s and Procedures as needed.
Well Control:
- It is the Driller’s responsibility to shut the well in, when a kick is detected.
- Kill well (when applicable) including hang off pipe, shut in well. Complete kill sheet, maintain pump strokes during kill operation.
- Driller must know the space out of the rams at all times.
Equipment:
- Liaise with maintenance Department heads, in order to plan maintenance according to operations.
- Oversee maintenance of Derrick/Mast and associated equipment, must perform a weekly mast inspection and record in IADC report and mast log book.
- Report immediately any deficiencies found in mast inspection to Toolpusher, STOP and repair immediately if items are to fall .
- Oversee operation and service of Stand pipe and Choke manifold.
- Oversee operation and service of drilling fluid system equipment, mixing pumps, mud pumps, make sure Permit to work ,JSA and procedures are used.
- Make sure mud pump hours are recorded and updated.
- Maintain drilling equipment, liaise with Toolpusher for inspections.
- Maintain, inspect lifting gear equipment under his responsibility, prepare equipment for inspections.
- Maintain hours of BHA, Drill pipe, Washpipe, Saver subs. Function test Lower and Upper I-Bop daily, same as TIW valve and Gray valve.
- Perform routine maintenance on motion compensator (Floaters)
- Oversee mixing and maintenance of drilling fluids
Relevant Experience/ Skills – Minimum
- Must have minimum 5 years experience in drilling operations; at least 3 years as an Assistant Driller using similar equipment.
- Must have completed the Company’s certification requirements.

- Proficient in using Top Drive systems.
- Proficient in nipple up 10K BOP’s Systems.
- Experienced in operating 2000HP Drawworks.
- Must hold current certification in Well Control (IWCF Supervisor level)
