Job Purpose / Objective
Assists the Driller in the operation of drawworks, mud pumps and rotating equipment, and in the supervision of the drilling crew.
Key Accountabilities 1
The Assistant Driller is accountable for his own acts and decisions.
QHSE Responsibilities:
- Conducts operation in a safe manner according to ADC policies and procedures.
- Applies proper rig operating procedures, STOP unsafe practices. Report near misses in real time.
- Plays an active part in QHSE meetings, tool box meetings, QIP (Quality Improvement Projects) Mentoring, Coaching.
- Is proficient in STOP program, and promotes the use of STOP for employees.
- Promotes the QHSE culture for the roustabouts, floormen and derrickman.
- In line with PMS program, maintains the lifting gear register. Ensure its accuracy and exhaustiveness.
Key Accountabilities 2
Drilling Operations
- Check proper line up of BOP and well control equipment at the beginning of his Tour: Accumulator pressures, BOP valves and choke manifold setup, degasser, FOSV (Full Opening Safety Valve) Gray valve and associated crossovers available on the rig floor.
- Ensure that the Trip tank is cleaned up after each trip.
- Assist the driller with drilling operations including relieve the driller, while supervised, in drilling ahead making connection, etc.
- Assist during tripping drillpipe including relieve and/or assist Derrickman and relieve the driller, while supervised, in operation of drawworks and other equipment.
- Assist in running and cementing of casing.
- Must be present on the rig floor when handling BHA.
- Assist running and retrieving of riser and BOP stack.
- Assist driller in other drilling operations, prepare BHA and other tubular on deck, record dimensions and list them.
- Perform any other duties as assigned by driller or tool pusher.
- Assist driller for rig move. Check that loads are firmly secured on trucks.
Equipment and System
- Assist in maintenance and repair of drilling equipment including pumps, rotary, swivel, and other drill floor equipment.
- Monitor mud system, and supervise solid control equipment and mud mixing operations.
- Repair or assist in repair of non-drilling equipment as directed by supervisor.
- Locate and dress tools, bits nozzles, roller reamers, casing scrappers, wash pipes.
- Make sure drilling equipment is repaired, cleaned up and stored properly after use.
- Prepare tools and equipment in advance and report missing or damaged equipment.
- Maintain and organize cleanliness of the rig, at all times.
- Prepare daily and weekly check lists.
Key Accountabilities 3
Marine:
- Understand safety precautions for handling heavy mooring and marine equipment on deck.
Technical/Administrative:
- Calculate ton miles on drilling line.
- Record on a daily basis mud pump hours and update as parts are changed.
- Calculate drill string and BHA measurements, submit to driller for verification
- Assist driller in maintaining records, logs. (such as kill sheets, Trip sheets)
- Use technical manuals including cementing tables, hydraulics books, drilling manuals, composite catalogue, manufacture operating manual, etc.
- Read and interpret various types of gauges, meters, and instruments such as torque meter, weight indicator, pressure gauges, and various chart recorders, ID3, E-Driller.
Management:
- Assist in supervision of drill crew.
- Assist in training of drill crew.
- Maintain good communication with driller, Rig Superintendent and other departments.
- Provides leadership and motivation to crew, leading by example in terms of energy, QHSE concerns, respect.
- Read, understand QHSE manual, and promote QHSE to his crew.
Relevant Experience
- Must have IWCF certificate Driller’s level.
- Must have prior experience on similar type rig of at least a year as a Derrickman or assistant Driller or have drilled on a large oilfield drilling rig.
- Must have completed certification program to required level.
