Position Overview:
We are seeking an experienced and results-driven Manager for the General Assembly (GA) Shop to lead and oversee all aspects of GA operations. This role will be responsible for setting strategic direction, managing operational execution, and leading a cross-functional launch team to ensure the successful startup, ramp-up, and steady-state production of vehicle programs in General Assembly. The ideal candidate will bring extensive experience in high-volume, automated automotive GA environments and demonstrate strong leadership in managing production readiness, launch execution, and team development.
Responsibilities:
1. Strategic Leadership:
- Define and execute the operational strategy for General Assembly aligned with corporate and plant objectives.
- Drive deployment of best practices, standardization, and continuous improvement initiatives across the GA shop.
- Ensure integration of new models and technologies with minimal disruption to existing operations.
2. Team Leadership and Development:
- Lead, coach, and develop the GA launch and production teams to ensure strong execution and ownership.
- Promote a high-performance, safety-first culture with accountability and engagement at all levels.
- Plan workforce requirements and skill development for production, technical, and support teams.
3. Operational Oversight and Execution:
- Manage all aspects of GA launch activities including line readiness, process validation, equipment commissioning, and operator training.
- Ensure production KPIs (Safety, Quality, Delivery, Cost, Morale) are met throughout all launch phases and into SOP.
- Oversee execution of production trials, torque integrity validation, and process control implementation.
4. Cross-Functional Collaboration:
- Work closely with Manufacturing Engineering, Quality, Material Planning, and Launch Program teams to align launch milestones and deliverables.
- Coordinate with the Plant Launch Manager to ensure seamless integration of GA launch activities within the broader plant ramp-up plan.
- Support change management related to design updates, process improvements, and equipment upgrades.
5. Problem Solving and Continuous Improvement:
- Lead structured problem-solving efforts to address operational and quality issues.
- Drive corrective actions, monitor effectiveness, and prevent recurrence of production disruptions.
- Foster a culture of root cause analysis and operational excellence.
6. Quality and Process Assurance:
- Ensure GA process controls, PFMEA, standard work, and built-in quality systems are in place and followed.
- Partner with Quality and Engineering to ensure vehicle build quality meets all compliance and customer requirements.
7. Resource and Material Management:
- Collaborate with Material Flow and Logistics to confirm material readiness, kitting accuracy, and line-side delivery.
- Review staffing, equipment, and space needs to support efficient operations and timely build execution.
8. Performance Reporting and Operational Reviews:
- Provide regular updates to senior leadership on GA shop status, launch progress, risks, and mitigations.
- Analyze production data to identify trends, variances, and opportunities for improvement.
- Lead readiness reviews and support governance meetings with data backed insights and action plans.
Skills & Requirements:
- Bachelor’s degree in Mechanical, Industrial, or Automotive Engineering (Master’s preferred).
- Minimum 12 years of experience in automotive manufacturing at a leading OEM, with significant exposure to General Assembly operations and new model launches.
- Proven track record in managing high-complexity GA shops with advanced automation and safety-critical processes.
- Strong leadership, communication, and cross-functional collaboration skills.
- Deep understanding of GA-specific technologies, torque applications, process validation, and quality control systems.
- Proficiency in lean manufacturing, root cause analysis, and continuous improvement tools.
- Flexibility to support shift coverage and weekend work during key launch phases.
