Job Description
We are seeking a highly organized and skilled Data Center Cabling Technician to support the installation, maintenance, and documentation of structured cabling systems within our data center environment. This role is critical to ensuring high availability and performance of network infrastructure by properly managing copper and fiber cabling, server connections, and cross-connects in a fast-paced, mission-critical setting.
Key Responsibilities:
- Install, terminate, and test structured cabling (Cat5e, Cat6, Cat6A, fiber optic) in data center environments.
- Patch and manage cables between servers, switches, and other network hardware according to design standards.
- Maintain cable organization using cable trays, Velcro ties, and color-coding schemes.
- Perform rack and stack duties: install and label servers, switches, PDUs, and related equipment.
- Conduct routine audits of patching and cabling layouts for accuracy and efficiency.
- Diagnose and troubleshoot connectivity issues related to physical cabling and patching.
- Work with network engineers and operations teams to plan and execute infrastructure upgrades.
- Document all cabling work in diagrams and ticketing systems for tracking and compliance.
- Ensure all work complies with data center policies, safety standards, and industry best practices.
Required Qualifications:
- High school diploma or equivalent required; associate degree or vocational training in networking or electronics preferred.
- 2+ years of experience in structured cabling, preferably within a data center or high-availability environment.
- Strong knowledge of EIA/TIA cabling standards, BICSI practices, and fiber optic types (single-mode/multimode).
- Proficient with testing tools (Fluke testers, OTDRs), crimpers, fiber cleavers, and splicing equipment.
- Experience reading network topology diagrams, floor plans, and cable run lists.
- Strong attention to detail, organizational skills, and the ability to follow strict change control protocols.
Preferred Qualifications:
- BICSI Installer I or II, FOA CFOT, or equivalent certifications.
- Experience with DCIM tools and cable management software.
- Familiarity with data center technologies (e.g., Cisco, Juniper, Dell, HP, Arista, VMware environments).
- OSHA 10/30 or other safety certifications.
