Job Description
We are looking for a skilled Carpenter Technician to join our team, reporting directly to the Head of Carpentry, Props, Puppets, and Illusions. The ideal candidate will be responsible for the safe and efficient maintenance, repair, and operation of all scenic, carpentry, props, puppets, and illusion elements used in rehearsals and performances. You will also support ongoing maintenance of onstage and backstage areas and collaborate with various departments as needed.
Key Responsibilities
Install, assemble, maintain, and repair all scenic elements, props, puppets, and illusions used in shows, rehearsals, and special events.
Perform cue tracks and provide backstage support for daily performances, events, and rehearsals.
Carry out furniture repairs and fabrication, cabinetry and millwork tasks, layout and installation of casework, and framing/finish carpentry.
Install doors, door frames, closures, panic hardware, and suspended or hard ceiling systems.
Assist with routine inspections, scheduled maintenance, and safety checks on all relevant equipment and areas.
Maintain a clean, organized, and safe work environment on stage, backstage, and in the workshop.
Operate all carpentry-related hand and power tools in a safe and responsible manner.
Read and interpret technical drawings, blueprints, and sketches to complete work accurately.
Respond to emergency repair requests and assist with urgent maintenance calls across departments.
Collaborate with other trades and provide assistance on cross-functional maintenance tasks when required.
Adhere strictly to all company safety policies and OSHA regulations.
Contribute to a positive and collaborative working atmosphere.
Qualifications
Education & Certifications
High school diploma or equivalent is required.
Diploma or Certificate in Carpentry is preferred.
Completion of a 4-year accredited apprenticeship program is an asset.
Current journeyman carpenter’s certificate is required; Red Seal certification is a plus.
Valid EWP and fall protection certification are advantageous.
Experience
Minimum 3–5 years of professional carpentry experience, preferably in a theatrical, live entertainment, or large contractor environment.
Proven hands-on experience in framing and finish carpentry, cabinetry, millwork, layout, and installation.
Experience with formwork and stage construction is an advantage.
Skills & Competencies
Ability to read, interpret, and work from blueprints, technical drawings, and design sketches.
Knowledge of workplace safety procedures, safe lifting techniques, and first aid/CPR.
Strong understanding of safe tool operation and maintenance.
Good oral and written communication in English.
Ability to work both independently and within a team environment.
Physically fit and capable of lifting, climbing, standing for extended periods, and performing manual labor.
