Job Purpose:
To ensure the effective implementation, monitoring, and continuous improvement of the radiation protection program in compliance with Saudi NRRC regulations. The RSO will oversee the safe use of ionizing radiation across radiotherapy, diagnostic radiology, and nuclear medicine departments and lead the licensing, inspection, and reporting processes with the NRRC.
Key Responsibilities:
Regulatory Compliance & Licensing:
- Lead the preparation and submission of all licensing applications to the NRRC for:
- Linear accelerators (radiotherapy)
- CT, X-ray, mammography, fluoroscopy, and dental imaging
- SPECT, PET/CT, and nuclear medicine laboratories
- Ensure all equipment, facilities, and personnel meet NRRC regulatory standards before inspection and operation.
- Serve as the primary liaison with the NRRC for audits, inspections, renewals, and regulatory updates.
- Maintain a comprehensive and up-to-date Radiation Safety Manual, consistent with NRRC guidelines.
Radiation Protection & Safety:
- Develop, implement, and oversee the Radiation Protection Program (RPP) across all departments.
- Conduct regular radiation safety training and certification for staff, including physicians, technologists, and support teams.
- Monitor staff radiation doses using dosimetry systems and ensure compliance with dose limits.
- Investigate and report radiation incidents and implement corrective and preventive actions (CAPA).
- Ensure shielding adequacy and radiation survey measurements for new and existing installations.
Quality Assurance & Audits:
- Coordinate periodic internal audits and reviews of radiation safety practices.
- Collaborate with physicists to ensure equipment QA programs are in place and up-to-date.
- Ensure documentation and records of all radiation-related activities are complete and readily available for NRRC or internal audits.
Inventory & Waste Management:
- Oversee the inventory, security, and usage of radioactive sources and sealed/unsealed isotopes.
- Supervise the proper storage, disposal, and transport of radioactive waste in accordance with NRRC and IAEA guidelines.
Staff Supervision & Coordination:
- Guide radiation protection officers or technicians within the institution.
- Participate in facility planning and renovation projects involving radiation areas to ensure regulatory compliance.
- Serve as an advisor to senior management on all radiation safety and compliance matters.
Qualifications:
- Bachelor’s or Master’s degree in Medical Physics, Health Physics, Nuclear Engineering, Radiological Sciences, or a related field.
- NRRC-recognized Radiation Protection Officer (RPO) Certification.
- Minimum 8–10 years of experience in radiation safety management, including experience in licensing with the NRRC.
- Extensive knowledge of Saudi NRRC regulations, IAEA standards, and international best practices in radiation protection.
Key Skills:
- Deep understanding of radiological safety standards across radiotherapy, diagnostic imaging, and nuclear medicine.
- Strong knowledge of NRRC licensing procedures and regulatory requirements.
- Excellent communication and leadership skills.
- High attention to detail and accuracy in documentation and compliance.
- Competency in radiation survey instrumentation, shielding design principles, and dose calculations.
Preferred:
- Experience working with multi-site healthcare organizations.
- Fluency in Arabic and English.
- Experience with e-licenses and NRRC electronic submission portals.
